Triangle Midwives, a division of Triangle Physicians for Women, is proud to offer 24/7 midwifery services to women giving birth at WakeMed Cary Hospital. The practice hired its first midwife more than a dozen years ago and the response was so positive that we now have seven midwives on staff.

Lauren Anderson CNM, Certified Nurse Midwife

Lauren Anderson

CNM

 

Lauren Anderson grew up in Charlotte, NC and got her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Medical University of South Carolina in 2008. She has over five years experience in maternity and neonatal nursing. Lauren has previously worked in the largest high-risk obstetrical center in Chicago, IL and an NC freestanding birth center.  

 

Lauren completed her Master of Science Degree in Nurse-Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University in 2014. She is passionate about breastfeeding, natural childbirth, and sees it as a privilege to walk with women on their journey. Lauren now lives in Chapel Hill and enjoys yoga, traveling the world and spending time with her husband and son.

Katie Calvillo

CNM, MSN

 

Katie Calvillo has been a Nurse-Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner since 2006.  After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Science at UNC-Chapel Hill, Katie attended Columbia University’s School of Nursing and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She also received a dual Master’s Degree in Midwifery and Women’s Health.  

 

Katie was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing and was a National Health Service Corps Scholar. She started as a Nurse-Midwife at Baystate Hospital in Springfield, MA and relocated to Raleigh in 2010.

 

Katie serves as Treasurer on the NC Affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and is a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association. In her free time, she enjoys being with her husband and three children.

Sara Dowd CNM, Certified Nurse Midwife

Sara Dowd

Sara was a Labor and Delivery Nurse at WakeMed Cary Hospital for 10 years and as an Obstetrics nurse for 13 years before joining Triangle Midwives. She attributes her inspiration for becoming a CNM to experience in Labor and Delivery and enjoys being present during the most important moments of women’s lives.   

 

Sara graduated from Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Winston Salem State University and her MSN in Nurse-Midwifery from East Carolina University.


Sara’s professional interests include low intervention birth and postpartum depression. She also enjoys traveling, sewing and crafting.

Heather L. Helton

CNM, MS

 

Heather’s career in obstetrics started in 2001. After graduating with her Bachelors of Science of Nursing from the University of Wisconsin, she practiced at hospitals in Iowa and Illinois. Heather relocated to North Carolina to attend East Carolina University, where she received her Masters in Nurse Midwifery.

 

Heather is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and Golden Key honor societies and provides full-scope midwifery care to low and moderately high-risk women. She enjoys working at Triangle Physicians for Women because of the positive and open-minded clinic environment.


Her professional interests include non-pharmacological therapies, postpartum depression, deep-relaxation labor techniques and teen pregnancy. In her free time, Heather enjoys going to the beach, crafting and spending time with her husband and two children.

April Horner CNM MSN, Certified Nurse Midwife

April Horner

CNM, MSN

 

April earned her Master of Science degree in Nurse Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University. She spent 10 years nursing at a high risk obstetrics practice and a clinical instructor for nursing students.

 

April’s professional interests include natural childbirth and Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBACs). She enjoys caring for women throughout their lifespan and being part of the collaborative environment at Triangle Physicians for Women.


In her free time, she loves practicing yoga, spending time outdoors exploring North Carolina and being active with her husband and two children.

Jessica Ramirez-Trower

CNM, MSN

 

Jessica Ramirez Trower was the youngest graduate from Broward Community College School of Nursing in 1995. She then received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, with honors, in 1997 from Florida International University. In 2001, she earned her Master of Science degree in Nursing/Nurse-Midwifery from University of Miami and was part of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Association.

 

Jessica has 15 years of nursing experience, specifically in maternity, newborn, prenatal intensive care, surgical, oncology and HIV/AIDS. She has worked as a midwife in public and private sectors and has provided full-scope care for the last 9 years. She is fluent in Spanish.


Jessica has an interest in providing patient care to achieve optimal health and well-being by complementing Western medicine with alternative therapeutics. In her spare time, she enjoys playing soccer, practicing yoga and spending time with her family outdoors.

Mary Charles Sutphin CNM, Certified Nurse Midwife

Mary Charles Sutphin

CNM

 

Mary Charles Sutphin has over 30 years experience as a nurse-midwife; 25 years in the Raleigh area. She was one of the first nurse-midwives to be licensed in the state of West Virginia.

 

She received her Master’s Degree in Maternity Nursing and Midwifery Certificate in 1973 from Columbia University in New York City. She says that “midwifery is in my soul” and “it is who I am”. Nurse-midwives delivered both of her adult children and Mary Charles delivered both of her grandchildren.

 

In addition to midwifery, Mary Charles is on the faculty at UNC School of Nursing at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has also taught maternity nursing at Duke School of Nursing. Mary Charles is an advocate for The Hallmarks of Midwifery, birth as a normal physiologic process and advocacy of non-intervention.
